We Are What We Do - a non-profit organisation that
aims to inspire people to use their everyday actions to change the world.
It all started with the release of a book called
Change the World for Ten Bucks (2005) that shows people 50
different actions that they can easily do to achieve this aim. Some are
environmental, some are to do with your relationships, some towards your
community, health etc.
Change the World 9-5, the sequel to our first book,
due for launch on 1st September, offers another 50 simple actions, this
time to make our workplaces better, healthier and happier.
Most of us spend a good deal of our waking lives
working and how we feel about this is important. It’s
all based on a very simple formula: small change x lots of people= BIG
change.

There are a surprising number of small differences we can
all make. For example, if every office worker wasted just one less staple,
we’d save 88 tonnes of steel every
year! And, if making the planet a
happier, safer, more sustainable place isn’t a good enough reason, then
there’s even a business case. A study undertaken in 2000 revealed that
72-85% of Australians had brought products on the basis of the companies
social or environmental issues. So, imagine, believe and begin changing
your 9 to 5.
Take a look at their website www.wearewhatwedo.org.au where you will also find the
action tracker where people can calculate the number of times they've
completed one of the suggested actions - they're up to almost 900,000
actions globally! The first book was a big success, with 300,000 copies
sold Australia wide and a million worldwide (each country has their own
version). We Are What We Do is a movement
inspiring people to use their everyday actions to change the world.
Whoever they are. And wherever they are. And that includes you.
In doing so they've created 50 simple, everyday actions
that can improve our environment, our health, and our communities, making
our planet and the people on it much happier. They started started by
putting these actions in a book, but the whole movement is getting bigger.
And bigger.
Where did the idea originate?
We Are What We Do began life as a project of the charity
Community Links. Community Links is an innovative inner city charity
running community-based projects in east London. Founded by local
volunteers , the charity now helps over 50,000 vulnerable children, young
people and adults every year. Most of its work is delivered in Newham, one
of the poorest boroughs in Europe, whilst Links UK shares the local
experience with practitioners and policy makers nationwide through an
extensive training, consultancy and publications programme.

How are we funded? Any profit that we make from the book,
Change the World for Ten Bucks, will go to the expansion of We Are What We
Do worldwide, including in Australia.
We aim to continue to work with partners on a pro bono basis
to develop new products and initiatives which are modestly priced (and
therefore accessible to as many people as possible) but which make a
modest surplus which can then be used to develop and sustain the movement
around the world.
Who makes it happen? You do. Everyone does. There are
hundreds of people all around the world taking part on various projects -
on editions of the book, films, exhibitions and websites, not to mention
all the people carrying out actions and helping to spread the word. The
amazing thing is that pretty much everyone's doing it for nothing - well
not for money that is. We're all doing it for the biggest prize there is -
the happy knowledge that we are all doing our bit. And our bit
counts because others are doing their bit too.
Who are we? We Are What We Do.
